Alternative one is a modification of the South Range Avenue interchange from a conventional diamond interchange into a diverging diamond interchange (DDI) with improvements to the ramps, South Range Avenue, and Rushing Road.
Since holding the first public meeting in May 2014, continued coordination with state and local agencies has provided additional information that may need to be included in the development and evaluation of project alternatives. Currently, DOTD and the project team is reviewing development activity in the project area and making a determination on the need for additional studies. The project team does anticipate additional traffic analysis to begin Winter 2014-15 with completion in early Spring 2015. Below are some photos of new construction in the Study Area. We recently posted an item about the advantages of roundabouts and how they differ from conventional intersections. In short, roundabouts eliminate conflict points, while increasing vehicle capacity; they reduce costs of traffic lighting; are safer for pedestrians; and the center islands can be attractively landscaped in an environmentally friendly manner. A roundabout is a circular intersection where traffic flows in a counterclockwise direction around a center island. Although they may look similar, roundabouts are not traffic circles or rotaries which may have stop signs, traffic signals, and higher speeds. Roundabouts allow traffic to flow through the intersection freely at slower speeds than the roadway. Drivers entering the roundabout yield to traffic inside the roundabout and adjust their speed to fit into gaps between vehicles. Roundabouts are also safer than traditional 4-way stops because they eliminate the left turn across oncoming traffic and basically eliminate head on and right-angle (or T-bone) collisions. Pedestrians are safer too. They cross shorter distances in front of slower moving traffic flowing in one direction. Because there are no signals to install, power, or maintain, roundabouts can cost less than traditional 4-way intersections with traffic lights. The environment likes roundabouts too. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing with the green center island, but their free-flowing movements reduce vehicle idle times which reduce vehicle emissions. This project is not anticipated to reduce congestion on Interstate 12. However, LADOTD is currently assessing improvements to Interstate 10 and other east-west arterials as part of the Interstate 10 (Mississippi Bridge to I-10/I-12 split) corridor improvement study. Future improvements to major east-west arterials and/or Interstate 10 would have a beneficial but unknown quantitative effect to interstate travel between Denham Springs and Baton Rouge.- phw_admin
